NEW moves designed to combat anti-social behaviour on public transport will be piloted in Leigh and Wigan.

Three sets of guidelines approved by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority Policy Committee are designed to deliver improved safety and security for passengers.

They cover school services, reporting and dealing with incidents on public transport and the need to give early warning of possible service withdrawals.

Trialled

Now that they have been agreed with Wigan Council's Public Transport Crime Task Group, which includes the council, police and bus operators, they will be trialled in the borough.

If the project is successful the guidelines will go on to form the basis for countywide discussions.

Cllr John Hilton, the authority's spokesperson for Wigan, said: "I'm very pleased that Wigan is going to be the first area to benefit. It is only by working in partnership that we can tackle these problems and I'm confident that when these new guidelines are applied they will go some way to reducing incidents of anti-social behaviour surrounding public transport in the area."
