HYNDBURN Council has given its approval to the idea of creating clusters of companies working in the same field, in a bid to boost the economy and attract more inward investment.

A report by Nigel Rix, director of Hyndburn First, said the East Lancashire economy was characterised by low levels of investment, low levels of entrepreneurial skill, and low levels of competitiveness.

Council leader Councillor Ian Ormerod said: "It must be our driving influence to bring jobs into this area. We have to explore various avenues. With clusters if one goes down the whole thing doesn't collapse like a pack of cards."
