CATON'S Olympic champion, Jason Queally, is gearing up for his bid to claim Commonwealth Games glory.

Queally goes for glory on Sunday in the 1000m time trial, the event he won gloriously in Sydney.

All eyes will be on Queally's home track, the Manchester Velodrome, as he bids to improve on the silver medal he won in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

The event is scheduled to start at 6pm in the evening and last until 9pm.

Jason and his England team-mates will also chase the Men' s Team Sprint title the following Friday.

The former Lancaster University employee now lives in Chorley to be closer to his training base.

Since winning the Olympics, he has become a well known name at home and abroad.

Queally will not be facing long-term rival Shane Kelly.

The Australian, a double Commonwealth gold medallist, is out with injury.

However, former BMX champion Jamie Staff of England is being tipped to give Queally a good run for his money.

Meanwhile, athlete Jamie Quarry has also been building up to the games in the Lune Valley.

Quarry, who is in a Decathlon competition, which will be wide open after the withdrawal of Dean Macey, is living in Halton and training in Lancaster.

He takes on the 10 gruelling events on Saturday and Sunday.
