A LANCASTER man has won himself a new bike as part of a cycling initiative aimed at encouraging people to cycle to work.

Lancashire County Council's Bike2Work week produced more than 60 pledges to cycle to work for some or all of the week and David Hirst from the intensive home support unit at Lancaster rode away with the first prize of a new mountain bike.

David said: "The win was fortuitous as I was preparing to buy a new cycle as my old one has seen better days."

County Cllr Nora Ward, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "The response to Bike to Work Week was very encouraging as this is the first time the County Council has taken part.

There were many more people from the Council who came in by bike but chose not to register as they are regular cyclists.

"The County Council is working on its staff travel plan to make it easier and more attractive for staff to use a range of transport options instead of relying on the car."
