POLICE want residents to ensure all windows are secure after a spate of burglaries in Darwen.

Several houses were targeted after windows or doors were spotted open by passing opportunists.

Sgt Alice Knowles of Darwen Police said: "With the muggy weather, people are leaving windows and doors open or ajar but think a burglary will never happen to them. But it is an open invitation, especially in terrace properties where the burglar is protected from view by surrounding walls."

In Winward Close, Lower Darwen, on Tuesday evening, burglars got in via an open living room window. They found car keys and bank cards and drove off with the owner's silver Vauxhall Amega worth £15,000, registration W303 DNP.

And alcohol, a video game and cash were stolen from a house in Ivinson Road, Darwen, on Sunday afternoon after burglars spied an open rear bedroom window.

Anyone with any information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
