ON the day school closed for the summer, Westleigh High School opened its new state-of-the-art science laboratories.

Dr David Ward, one of the country's boffins, cut the ribbon on the £500,000 facility.

Then Dr Ward, lead scientist with SETPOINT, the Science, Engineering and Technology Network for the North West, demonstrated experiments to year 7 students.

The labs, which were funded by the government's Science in the 21st Century initiative, have the latest equipment and facilities, now the set up is one of the best in the country.

Head teacher, Mr John Pout, said: "Our science team under the excellent leadership of Julian Pollard does a first class job. It's good to be able to provide 21st century facilities for students and teachers."
