A HOMELESS man who was living in an empty garage had not eaten for two days when he was arrested for shoplifting.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Dennis Knowles asked police to keep him in custody to help him beat the drugs habit that was dragging him down.

And his solicitor, Basharat Ditta, told the court he had instructions not to apply for bail because his client was desperate to go through detoxification in prison.

Knowles, 20, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to stealing a £15 toy from Woolworths. He was remanded in custody to appear before Burnley magistrates on October 21 when he is due to be sentenced for another shoplifting offence.
