COMMUNITY Support Officers, nicknamed Blunkett's Bouncers, are set to patrol the streets of the borough.
The Home Office announced Greater Manchester Police (GMP) will receive £1.42 million for 160 community support officers (CSOs). It is not yet clear how many support staff will be taken on at Bury.
They will play a complementary role to police officers, tackling disorder, anti-social behaviour and routine patrols to increase visible policing.
They will free officers to tackle more serious crimes, including street robberies. Since the Street Crime Initiative was launched in April, street crimes have fallen by 21 per cent. As a result the Government has awarded GMP an additional £2.39 million to step up its operation to combat offenders.
Commenting on the street crime reduction, Chief Constable David Wilmot, head of GMP, said: "We made street crime the top priority and staff have responded with focus and determination.
"Street Crime is an issue for the whole community and the success of partnerships with the courts, Crown Prosecution and Probation Service has been the foundation of our initiative. The value brought to this group by working in drug treatment and the prison services, along with the welcome involvement of the education authorities can only add to the long term success in reducing street crime."
