RATTLE those pots and pans -- the search is on for the best young chef in East Lancashire.

Rotarians have launched their annual Young Chef of the Year competition to find the area's wannabe Jamie Oliver.

Competition co-ordinator Malcolm Weaving, who is proprietor of the Stirk House Hotel, Gisburn, said the competition, now in its seventh year, aimed to strengthen the future of the hospitality industry in East Lancashire.

"The competition aims to encourage young people who may be considering entering or have already entered the catering profession. No special qualifications are needed and the competition will be a practical test of flair, imagination and enthusiasm in preparing a simple meal."

The competition is open to young chefs between the ages of 14 and 18, who will be asked to prepare a two-course meal costing no more than £4.

The closing date for entries is October 14 and an overall final will be held at a venue to be decided in January, where participants will be asked to prepare a three-course meal costing no more than £6.50.

Prizes include an engraved trophy and set of chef's knives, items of cookery equipment and gift tokens.
