CLARETS boss Stan Ternent is hoping to draw a top Premiership side after steering Burnley into the Worthington Cup third round for the first time in 20 years.

On a dramatic night at the McAlpine Stadium, they clinched a 1-0 win after extra-time thanks to a goal from sub striker Dimitri Papadopoulos and the heroics of keeper Marlon Beresford.

That ensured that the current unbeaten run has been stretched to eight games and another potentially embarrassing cup defeat has been avoided.

Papadopoulos was the last of the club's four main strikers to be in action last night, Ian Moore, Gareth Taylor and Robbie Blake starting in a front three, but he showed his prowess with the ice cool finish that could be worth its weight in gold for the Clarets.

Ternent paid £500,000 for him 14 months ago but increasingly it is looking like a shrewd piece of business and the manager is delighted with the dilemma about who he should play up front.

"I have said that it is the strongest department in our squad and Dimi certainly gets in there," he said, knowing that he has another tough decision to make ahead of Saturday's trip to Hillsborough.

But the goal would not have been enough if it had not been for Beresford's heroics with two stunning late saves from Jon Stead and Danny Schofield.

Ternent was delighted that his players weathered the storm and he said: "When you go away from home you expect the other side will have a right good go and if Huddersfield play like that in every game they would not be in the division below us.

"But the most important thing was to get through to the next round and be in the hat.

"We have not got this far for a couple of decades and so it is a step in the right direction."

Stan Ternent's hope is to get a home draw against a big club and he will find out his side's fate half an hour before kick off against the Owls at the weekend.
