URGENT talks are being held tomorrow at a closure-threatened clothing factory.

Leigh MP Andy Burnham will meet with management and trade union representatives at Bentwood -- one of the town's major employers -- which has been earmarked for closure with the possible loss of more than 350 jobs.

"It is a really sad situation," said Mr Burnham. "I will be approaching the Department of Trade and Industry to try to secure some help which may provide an alternative to closure.

"My other aim is to secure the best possible deal for those affected."

The factory, in Leigh Road -- where top quality clothing is manufactured for the Marks and Spencer chain -- reopened this week after the annual September holidays.

A statement issued by Bentwood's parent company, Stirling Group PLC, said: "In order to manage production in line with market conditions, it has been essential to announce the proposed closure of the Leigh factory.

"The site will continue to manufacture for some time yet, during which consultations will take place."

Bolton-based GMB branch secretary Graham Wells, speaking on behalf of workers, said: "Everyone is very shocked at this.

"They are a good workforce and in the 10 years I've looked after them there has never been a strike."
