DISABLED countryside enthusiasts can now enjoy the facilities at a popular wood and picnic site in the Ribble Valley.

Saturday sees the official opening of a new Access For All trail at the Spring Wood Picnic Site near Whalley.

The official opening will be performed by Graham Carter, a member of the Lancashire Local Access Forum, with representatives of the Friends of Spring Wood group, the Lancashire Local Access Forum, the Countryside Agency and Lancashire County Council.

The Friends received £11,000 from the Local Heritage Initiative last year to improve disabled access.

The wood is popular with locals and visitors and although there are parking spaces and a disabled toilet, much of the site has been inaccessible to people with limited mobility.

With help from Lancashire Countryside Service, the Friends constructed a new trail, installed picnic tables and two additional parking bays.

Interpretation boards have been erected to give information on the wood's history, flora and fauna.
