Woolston Rovers 18

Leigh East 22

LEIGH East failed to make much impression in Saturday's National Conference Premier Division game at Woolston but still managed to clinch the two points that takes them to second place in the table.

Michael Whiteside had a great first half, scoring the try which set East on the way to victory, while half backs Danny Kilshaw and John Gunning tried hard to get things moving in attack.

Simon Stephens and Ian Hudspith put in the effort but realistically only man of the match Mick Redford played to his full potential.

Woolston, with only one point tot heir name, are struggling for form and East appeared to lower their standards to match. Their attacking flair was spasmodic and missed tackles made the final scoreline seem a lot closer than it really was.

East had an average first half but still managed to turn round with a 16-10 lead. Whiteside set them on the way with a fifth minute try after latching onto a superb pass from Gunning.

Woolston scored an unconverted try to level but then took the lead with a penalty and a second try. Ian Lewis almost pulled one back for East but late in the half Stephen's long pass sent Redford in and Molyneaux's high kick brought another touch down for Warhurst. Kilshaw added both goals.

Hudspith crossed seven minutes into the second half, Kilshaw again converting from the touchline.

East looked comfortable until Woolston came up with two unconverted tries in the final 10 minutes, leaving the Leigh side to defend desperately to hang on to the points.

Old rivals Wigan St Patrick's are the visitors to Grasmere Street on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
