LEE Briscoe's first half header was enough to give the Clarets a welcome win against Forest although they were grateful that former hero David Johnson had left his shooting boots at home
Burnley had started brightly and could have led inside two minutes had it not been for a stunning save from Darren Ward to keep out Gareth Taylor's header after a mazy dribble by Glen Little.
Moments later the big striker won another ball in the air and Paul Weller found the net only to be denied by an offside flag.
Briscoe then converted Paul Cook's 28th minute cross for a deserved lead.
After the break Johnson missed two good chances and Beresford saved twice from Riccardo Scimeca but Ward also saved well to deny Taylor and Dimitri Papadopoulos.
Clarets boss Stan Ternent named an unchanged side for the vital league game against Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor.
Forest had one change, Eoin Jess coming in for suspended David Prutton.
