BRITANNIA Coconutters will perform alongside the Bradshaw Mummers in a special 30th anniversary performance.

The group, from Yorkshire, will be visiting Ramsbottom on Sunday.

The Mummers, who dress up and blacken their faces similarly to the Coconutters, were formed at the Bradshaw Tavern Folk Club on the outskirts of Halifax for the club's 1972 New Years' Eve party.

Although the club closed several years ago, the name survives through the Mummers who have gone on to appear at major festivals throughout the country, including Warwick, Bromyard, Chester, Beverley, Upton on Severn , Alcester and Middlewich.

A spokesman said: "We specialise in taking the traditional mumming themes of death and resurrection and good versus evil and presenting them in a form which modern audiences can appreciate, including visual and verbal gags.

"The teams' repertoire includes over 20 separate scripts, mostly self-penned, with their blackened faces stemming from the belief of original medieval street performers that mocking the Devil would bring retribution should they be recognised."

Linda De Ruijter, Ramsbottom Events Organiser, said: "We are very lucky to have the Bradshaw Mummers in the town who will be accompanied by the Britannia Cocunutters.

"We would encourage everybody to come down and have a look at what they have to offer."
