COUNCILS across Lancashire are leading the way in a government drive to reduce waste.
The county has seen a substantial reduction in the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill sites in the past year alone, with an associated rise in recycling, composting and reuse.
One of the key areas that the Government is to target is that of rubbish that could be composted - which makes up nearly one third of the typical bin in Lancashire -by encouraging people to compost rubbish at home.
Lancashire County Council has distributed 50,000 compost bins to householders across the county in the past 14 months, with a target to distribute a further 50,000 bins by 2004.
The County Council has also carried out extensive work at Household Waste Recycling Centres to allow people to recycle more.
