A WOMAN has been charged with attempted murder after her husband was left fighting for his life with severe burns following a night out.

Susan Mary Jones, 44, of King Street, Haslingden, was expected to appear before Burnley Magistrates today.

Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called to King Street, Haslingden, early yesterday following reports of a serious incident.

Steven Jones was taken to Whiston Hospital in Prescott, Merseyside, after initially receiving treatment at Burnley General Hospital.

He was today in the intensive care unit where his condition was described as critical.

A family who live nearby in King Street, said they saw the couple in the nearby Irish Democratic League club on Saturday evening. Cecil Taylor, 73, who lives next door to the couple, added: "I heard them going into the house and there was the sound of shouting. We heard their dog barking and the next thing I know, Steven's being rushed to hospital.

"I've known them both for years," he added.

The couple are said to have three sons, Lee, Michael and Andrew. A policeman was guarding the house yesterday.

The area was cordoned off to allow an examination of the scene.

Detective Inspector Mark Maxlow, said: "In the early hours of Sunday morning a serious incident took place at an address in King Street, Haslingden.

"A male has been treated for serious burn injuries. After being initially taken to Burnley General Hospital the man was later transferred to another hospital."

A fire brigade spokesman said: "We attended an incident in King Street at 1.20am on Sunday morning. A man had serious burns and was taken to hospital."
