LANCASHIRE supplied five of the North West's top earners. But for David Crossland, the one-time Burnley travel agent who went on to launch the international MyTravel holiday empire, the listing will ring a little hollow.

Although a survey of the region's corporate elite placed him seventh-highest earner on £5.8 million, his personal fortune slumped by more than £145 million.

The company, better known as Airtours, had a disastrous year of profit warnings and accounting problems that saw its share price collapse from a high of £2.85 to as low as 14p.

The county's biggest earner on £8.7 million was John Hargreaves, who founded the Matalan discount chain from a warehouse in Bamber Bridge.

In fourth and sixth place were brothers-in-law Owen McLaughlin and Sean Keogh, chairman and chief executive of Enterprise plc, who earned £6 million and £6.9 million respectively. In fifth place was former Matalan chief executive Angus Munro on £6.7 million.
