AN animal lover who faced a £1,000 bill after rescuing a cat maimed by fireworks today said a heartfelt thanks to people who donated money to the recovery fund.
Maureen Savage, of Moggies on Stansfield Street, Darwen, said she could not thank people enough for raising the money to save the life of the young cat.
She appealed for help to pay the bill through the Lancashire Evening Telegraph after a firework was strapped to the animals back. The cat, who Maureen has christened Lucky, underwent emergency surgery to save his life.
Maureen, who looks after strays at her own cost and pays all the vet bills, said: "I would like to say a massive thank you because the public raised nearly the entire amount needed to save Lucky's life."
Maureen took in four kittens and one cat over Christmas, all of which were re-homed almost as soon as she found them.
She said: "I knew of people who wanted the kittens and I also knew someone who wanted an elderly cat so it all worked out very well."
