ATHERTON could lose a second post office as part of a national restructuring and modernising programme.
The proposed closure in April of Atherton's Wigan Road Post Office in Atherton follows the announcement that Hindsford Post Office could close due to a declining number of customers and increased running costs.
The Post Office's area head Eddie Herbert said: "Proposals to close post offices are not made without considerable research and discussion so we are anxious that customers and all relevant organisations understand why we consider it necessary to reduce the size of the network.
"The harsh reality is that many urban post offices are struggling to survive because there are too many branches for the amount of business."
Should the Wigan Road closure go ahead customers will have to use Atherton Post Office in Market Street or Hindley Green Post Office in Atherton Road.
Before a final decision is made the company is keen to hear from those likely to be affected. Letters should be sent to arrive before February 24 to: National Consultation Team, PO Box 641, St Albans, AL1 5XN.
