BURY Council and emergency services staff have been thanked for the smooth evacuation and care of 200 people in Prestwich during a major incident.
Special plans were put into operation in the Sedgley Park area when a fire broke out in a garage which contained gas cylinders.
The fire brigade evacuated the area for 24 hours during the incident just over a week ago to allow the cylinders to cool.
In the hours that followed, the town's Longfield Suite became a rest centre for local people and they were given warm clothing and any extra help they needed.
Mark Sanders, Bury Council's chief executive, said: "I want to thank all our staff involved in this incident for the professional way they tackled it and the hard work put in by all. It was a good job, well done.
"And thanks to close co-operation with the emergency services, we were able to quickly put into operation our plans for just such an eventually. We will be reviewing what happened and the experience gained will be utilised for the future if needed."
