PLANS to close a post office in Lancaster have sparked a Green Party protest.

Bulk ward greens say the proposed closure of the Dumbarton Road Post Office will create huge problems for the elderly, mothers with young children and people with mobility difficulties.

Spokesman Sue Paylor told the Citizen: "The Post Office excuse that other post offices such as Ullswater Road and Stonewell are very near is an insult to residents.

"Whoever said this has no idea about the steep hills, broken pavements and unsafe crossings en route to them."

And John Whitelegg adds: "Some people actually choose to shop locally for a number of reasons.

"Walking down to Stonewell via St Peter's Road and Moor Lane can be like an SAS course of uneven pavements and busy crossing points.

"This is a nightmare clearly dreamt up by people who never walk anywhere."

Bulk Ward Green Party has written to central government to call for a halt to the policy of post office closures.
