AN elderly woman died from peritonitis after an operation to remove a tumour from her bowel.

Mary Ellen Yates, aged 87, of Henrietta Street, Leigh, was admitted to the Royal Bolton Hospital after doctors found the tumour. A biopsy showed the tumour was cancerous and it was removed, along with a segment of the bowel, but Mrs Yates then developed peritonitis.

Doctors at the hospital thought Mrs Yates would not survive another operation. She died at the hospital on August 12. Coroner Jennifer Leeming recorded a verdict of misadventure.
