HAIRDRESSER Susan Whittaker-Tyrer was cut up when she noticed signs leading to an Atherton superstore.

The Morley Street stylist claimed when Market Street was closed to traffic felt-tip pointers to Tesco appeared on signs all over town.

She said: "The main street was closed and traffic was directed along Mealhouse Lane. I noticed road signs were turned round and had felt tip markings pointing to Tesco.

"They were in Tyldesley Road, Mealhouse Lane, Hamilton Street and Newbrook Road.

"I was livid. Our businesses are suffering because of these long-standing road works, and it seemed every road to Atherton goes to Tesco. I don't know who put these signs up, but it's not on.

"Atherton is a brilliant little shopping town but you've got to be an Olympic hurdler to get round at the moment."

A Tesco spokesman claimed the store was not responsible but because contractors had blocked the road they had used the signs to point the way to the supermarket.

A council spokesman said a complaint had been received and contractors would be advised to ensure road signs were displayed correctly.
