REPRESENTATIVES from all areas of Blackpool's community joined together to reflect on Britain's third Holocaust Memorial Day at the town hall, on Monday (Monday, January 27).
Rabbi David Braunold lead a commemorative prayer, followed with presentations by pupils from St Mary's RC, Montgomery, Highfield, St George's C of E and Bispham High Schools who read their own poetry and short stories on the Holocaust theme. An exhibition included a video recording from the Anne Frank Trust. The event was open to members of the public and was attended by the Mayor of Blackpool, Cllr Ivan Taylor; the Mayoress, Cllr Sylvia Taylor; Deputy Mayor, Norman Hardy and Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Barbara Hardy. Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 58th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
This year's theme 'Children and the Holocaust', focused on the 1.5 million Jewish and non-Jewish children who died during the Holocaust. The day also reflected many children continuing to suffer in conflicts.
