CYCLISTS could find themselves on the path to trouble after police and community leaders in Wyre launched a new initiative to crack down on unlit riders.

Police in the Poulton, Cleveleys and Garstang areas are warning bike-riders to light up or risk a £30 fine if caught riding after daylight hours without adequate lighting.

The initiative is backed by the Wyre Community Safety Partnership after members highlighted road safety as one of its main goals for improvement.

Inspector Richard Debicki said: "The daylight hours are at their shortest at the moment.

"And we are concerned that youngsters and adults do not consider their own safety and the safety of others in that they do not have the correct and appropriate lighting on their bikes.

"This, of course, is unlawful and riders could find themselves with a fine or even taken to court.

"And is an appeal for people to make sure that they do consider their own safety and that they do really light up.

"The group has asked that we look at tackling this in partnership with the various relevant agencies.

"If you are caught using a bicycle without headlights there is a £30 fine on a fixed penalty ticket.

"This could be a lot higher if you are taken to court with a fine and court costs as well."
