THOUSANDS of East Lancashire householders are to join a pilot scheme which aims to introduce continental-style recycling to the area.
Around 6,000 homes in Rossendale will be given plastic boxes and sackcloth bags over the next few weeks to launch the start of user-friendly glass and paper collections.
The boxes and bags have been used in Europe for years -- but most British recyclers have had the inconvenience of having to travel to recycling centres.
David Rigby, Rossendale Council's Environmental Services Manager, said: "Some homes already have blue bins which have reduced waste going to landfill by 34 per cent in just four months. We are simply asking householders to put the cans and glass in the boxes and the newspapers in the bags and we will collect them every two weeks."
Councillors hope to extend the scheme to 26,000 (90 per cent) Rossendale homes within 12 months.
