I MUST write in response to the letters from councillors Connolly (Jan 7) and Campbell (Jan 14).
The fact is that, yet again, council tax in Bury will rise this year above the rate of inflation. The Chancellor's pre-budget report gave the impression that rises throughout the country could be in the region of 16 per cent over two years. Council tax rises have become another of Labour's many "stealth tax" increases.
On the question of Bury being a "weak" council, I draw attention to the Audit Commission report, which suggests that Conservative councils do it better, providing more value to council tax-payers than their Labour and Lib-Dem counterparts.
In the main, Conservative councils charge lower council tax and deliver better services. Twenty-seven per cent of Conservative councils were graded "excellent", while just 12 per cent of Labour authorities, and 11 per cent of Lib-Dems achieved that rating.
Perhaps the time has come to vote out Labour in this year's council elections.
