A COUPLE whose dreams came true when they took over running the pub where they first met, have won a national award for excellence.

Debra and Shaun Holden, who first met at the Stop and Rest pub, Brandy House Brow, Blackburn 12 years ago, had always talked about taking it over one day.

When the tenancy became available last January they jumped at the chance. Now they have won the Newcomer of the Year award from among 800 Avebury Taverns Pubs throughout the UK.

"The Stop and Rest has been a major part of our lives for years," said Debra. "Shaun and I shared our first drink together here, back in the days when it really was the place to be.

"We always said that we'd love to take it over."

Since taking the reins Debra and Shaun have introduced new darts, pool, football and domino teams.

They also host events most nights in the week, including a 'free-and-easy' sing-along, big-screen football and karaoke.

"It's a lot of hard work, but it's fun, and there's always something going on," added Debra.

"The only day that we don't have an event is Wednesday, and we're thinking of turning that into a quiz night."

The couple received their award at a ceremony at The Belfry in Warwickshire, where they were presented with a crystal vase. Their prize also included a break for two in Jerez, Spain.

Avebury Taverns regional operations manager Peter Cavanagh said: "The recent success at the Stop and Rest is the direct result of Debra and Shaun's enthusiasm and hard work. It's clear when tenants put their hearts and souls into a pub, and the two of them have certainly done this.

"They have also achieved very high standards and made a significant contribution to the local community."
