A TEENAGER has died following a collision on a busy road in Burnley.

John Paul Henry Fallon, 13, of Irene Street, Burnley, was crossing Brunshaw Road near the junction with Brunshaw Avenue when he was struck by a passing car at about 6.30pm yesterday.

He suffered serious multiple head injuries and fractures and was taken to Burnley General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Police said it appeared John had run out into the road from a grass embankment and had been following two friends.

He was hit by a Vauxhall Omega driven by Russell Midgeley, 36, of Abbey Village, near Chorley, which was travelling down the hill towards Burnley centre. He was not injured in the collision.

The road was closed for several hours while police cleared the scene and carried out accident investigations.

A police spokesman said: "It does appear that John ran out into the road and was struck by a passing vehicle and tragically later died from his injuries.

"We have launched an investigation and are appealing for any witnesses to the accident to call us."

A spokesman for Burnley ambulance who attended the scene said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic accident and paramedics treated the victim at the scene and took him to Burnley General Hospital.

"This is a tragic thing to happen to such a young lad."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call them at Burnley Police on 01282 425001.
