AN au pair has been praised by firefighters after saving the lives of three children following a fire at a house in Accrington today.

Fire broke out under the floorboards of a detached house in Hollins Lane at 12.30am following an electrical fault.

Au pair Romana Cazmeroa was awoken by the sound of a smoke alarm and roused the three sleeping youngsters.

She then hurried her young charges from the smoke-filled home before alerting the emergency services.

The parents of the three children were contacted by firefighters and returned to find their children safe and sound in the back of a fire engine.

Accrington Fire Station officer John Pinder said: "This young woman did all the right things.

"She promptly escorted the children from the house, then contacted us.

"This could well have been a tragedy, but a smoke-alarm was fitted in the house and the au pair did all the right things.

"She is a bit of a heroine and is to be congratulated."
