EIGHTY night shift workers were evacuated when a fire involving a machine smoke-logged a Haslingden factory.

Firefighters were called to Duralay Ltd, carpet underlay manufacturers, in Broadway, at 4.30am.

Five fire engines from Haslingden and Rawtenstall attended the fire which involved a large underlay machine.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the factory and tackled the blaze, where they remained for two hours.

Darrell Kemm, Sub Officer at Rawtenstall Fire Station, said: "The fire created quite a lot of of smoke and while we were tackling the fire we felt it appropriate to ensure that nobody was inside the building.

"Production was halted for two hours while we controlled the fire and made sure the area was safe.

"We are still investigating the exact cause of the fire which is thought to have stated from the oven overheating. No-one was hurt."

The middle of the warehouse had to be rebuilt in 2001 after more than 150 firefighters tackled an inferno which broke out at Duralay, causing millions of pounds-worth of damage.
