RIBBLE Valley Tory MP Nigel Evans has called for more consultation on the referendum for the North West's proposed elected regional assembly in October.

He said he had received more letters on the issue than any other topic, adding there has been opposition to postal voting and he was worried many people would not even bother.

He backed Pendle Labour MP Gordon Prentice's call for a 50 per cent threshold of the number of potential electors having to vote to make any decision to establish an assembly take effect. He warned: "The whole process looks more and more like a sham to me."
