THIRTY firefighters battled to contain a fierce blaze which swept through piles of wooden pallets at a Leigh firm.

Firemen arrived at Ashton Pallet Services in Bridgewater Business Park to find the flames reaching more than 60 feet high.

They fought to contain the fire and prevent if from spreading to nearby firms.

Crews from Leigh, Atherton, Bolton and Farnworth were sent to the blaze at at 1.30am on Sunday. An area of 160 square yards filled with wooden pallets was well alight by the time crews arrived at the firm. They battled with the flames for four hours and firefighters remained at the scene until yesterday afternoon.

Leigh fire chief Chris Ward said: "We don't know how the fire started but investigations are under way.

"The only damage was to the pallets themselves. Our knowledge of the available water outlets meant we could put the fire out efficiently and save the buildings on all three sides of the yard. A number of people reported the fire as the flames were 50 or 60 feet high by the time we arrived."
