TWO teenagers accused of taking part in an unprovoked early hours attack which left a musician seriously injured have given their version of events to a jury.

Site engineer Daniel Grimshaw, 18 and window cleaner Kevin White, 17 are said to have joined in after their friend Andrew Shaw, 19, provoked a fight with alleged victim Iain Campbell Hodgen.

Mr Hodgen, of Nelson, suffered a broken leg, split lips and had to have plastic surgery after the alleged beating last August.

He was left covered in blood as he was attacked by more than one person after he left a club in Burnley, a court was told.

Shaw, of Scott Street, Burnley, has admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm. Grimshaw, of Dunoon Street and White, of Padiham Road, both Burnley, plead not guilty to the charge.

Grimshaw told Burnley Crown Court he had no criminal convictions. He said he had been to Club 53 in the town and he, Shaw, White and others were heading for a taxi after going to a chip shop.

He said he saw Shaw "scrapping," against a shop window and he went to try and split it up. Grimshaw said:" It looked like Andy was getting beaten up."

He added it seemed Mr Hodgen was "getting the best of Andy," and he tried to drag him off his friend.

The defendant said he lost his grip, fell, got up and then "police came flying round the corner.

White claimed he thought he would split it up, shouted to Mr Hodgen to get off but he didn't.

The defendant continued: "I pulled him round with his left shoulder and as I pulled him round he went to hit me. I hit him with my left hand."
