FIRE engines were called to a disused wood yard in Nelson to tackle a blaze, believed to have been started deliberately.

The fire at Lambert's Wood Yard, off Manchester Road, was spotted at 12.30pm on Tuesday by someone on the motorway who called the fire brigade.

When crews arrived, a pile of timber and the roof of the building it was stored in were well alight. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and put out the blaze. They were at the scene for five hours. Sub Officer Neil Hardiman said investigations into the cause of the fire were continuing, but there were signs of forced entry at the yard and the fire was thought to have been started deliberately.

He said they had been called to several fires on the site in the past.

Sub Officer Hardiman added: "From a safety point of view, if kids are going to go in there, there are holes in the floor and they will be putting themselves at risk."
