AN EAST Lancashire MP has launched a bitter attack at Westminster on "wretched, inefficient wind turbines".

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans spoke out against turbines, including two on land at Caton Moor and Coal Clough, near Burnley.

He spoke out as MPs debated whether the green electricity generation systems worked, or not.

And there have been applications to build more in Mr Evans' constituency, and elsewhere in the county.

Mr Evans told Energy Minister Stephen Timms: "You must recognise that not everybody loves the wretched, inefficient wind turbines. I prefer them off-shore to on-shore, but when they are close to the coast will you ensure that discussions are held with local residents about the impact on tourism, and water sports, and on birdlife?

"A Californian experiment showed that a considerable number of birds, including rare breeds, were dying.

"If a small part of the subsidy for wind energy was spent on energy conservation, more energy would be saved than is produced by the wretched wind turbines."

Mr Timms replied: "There is strong public support throughout the country for the development of renewal energy.

"Careful assessment will be made of every project impact."
