STUDENTS from Westleigh, Hesketh Fletcher and Fred Longworth high schools are gaining 'hands-on' catering skills at United Utilities' Anderton Centre.

There they will pick-up basic skills and vocational qualifications as part of a project at the former conference centre now being run as an outward bound venture staffed by catering, business administration, leisure and tourism students.

Supported by teachers, lecturers and personal advisers the project is funded by United Utilities, Wigan Council and the Learning Skills Council through the European Social Fund.

Westleigh High deputy head, John Banks said: "We have been offering NVQ's at Westleigh for four years and the facilities at the Anderton Centre will give our Year Nine students the opportunity for real 'hands-on' experience of the catering and hospitality trades."

Wigan's Learning Partnership of the Council, Wigan & Leigh College, secondary schools and Connexions is backing the scheme.
