GOLF: Eddie finally calls the tune

A fine musician, Eddie had been unable to hit the right notes with his golf until Sunday, when his dedication to the game paid off.

His 42 points was way ahead of his fellow competitors in the season's first single stableford and a reduction of two on his handicap will be sweet music to Eddie's ears.

David Coupe led the runners-up on 39 points after a card play-off with James Jackson, Archie Moro and Connor McLaughlin all on the same score.

Giles Lawson made a welcome appearance on the winners list with a creditable 38 points for sixth place.

A team competition on Saturday resulted in a comprehensive victory for Peter Dunn's team with 115 points. Ably assisted by John Cartmell, John Pawson and David Wilson, the quartet took first prize from Jim Sprint, Oliver Drinkwater, Geoff Sutcliffe and Alex Taylor.

Clitheroe's Mail on Sunday team progressed to round three of the nationwide competition with a 3-1 success at Colne Golf Club.

Rob Andrew, David Wilson, Andrew Walmsley and Garry Speak were the successful players.

Junior organiser Simon Hale has prepared an intensive programme of events for young golfers at Clitheroe, where Richard Thompson hit the jackpot twice, winning both junior medals in the first week with net 71 and net 65.

Six handicap player Andrew Benniews in fine form with net 72 and 71 to take two prizes while Sarah Hale continued to impress, with two top three finishes.

Baxenden Golf Club president Bruce Howard took on the new captain Larry Glover in the annual president v captains four man team event on Saturday.

After all the scores were added up, the president's 10 four- man teams announced an honourable half against the captain's.

Paul Mabbutt, Phil Berry, Tony Walsh and Jim Eke, playing for the captain, claimed the first prize at the

evening's social event.

Sunday's Spring Medal competition winners were: Division One Mick Bottomley 72-7-65; Division Two, Stephen Nolan 80-13-67; Division Three Peter Richardson 87-17-70.
