WE write this as a tribute to Ruth Shapiro, who died so tragically in a fire at her home in Dalton Avenue, Whitefield.

She was a much-loved person with a heart of gold. We are close friends and feel we need to say a few things about Ruth and her life.

Ruth lived alone with her dog Rebel, who was her life, her constant companion. Ruth was wronged by society. She had no running water or flushing toilet and was unable to cook for herself. When we asked for help on her behalf, the authorities would say it was "in the pipeline".

Ruth had a few very good friends who she would visit frequently. We would ensure that she didn't go without food or companionship. She loved her music and videos with a passion and she adored Elvis. She loved dressing up and wearing her costume jewellery. Just days before she sadly died, Ruth was the happiest she had been for a long time.

On the morning of this tragedy, a neighbour and close friend heard all the commotion and ran across the road we to see if Ruth was OK. It was then the fireman realised that Ruth was inside and started to smash open the front door but, sadly, was unable to save her. Her friends all gathered outside and we were informed that it would be best if we went. We knew that it wasn't good news and then we were told the heartbreaking news.

The "rubbish" referred to, outside the back door, was in fact bags of old clothes placed at the rear of the house waiting for the authorities to arrange removal.

Ruth is going to be sadly missed by us all. We still can't believe this has happened and we still expect her to come bouncing into our homes with that huge smile she always had. God bless Ruth. May we let her rest in peace.
