A BURNLEY primary school captured the imagination of education watchdog inspectors who slackened their official comments to say "pupils loved being there."

The compliment comes after Ofsted teams were recently criticised by teaching unions for being too critical and cold.

Headteacher at Lowerhouse Junior School, Dominic Conti, said he was delighted with the inspection, which described standards overall as good.

Mr Conti said: "We were nervous after there has been so much said about the new Ofsted inspection framework since September.

"For them to say the pupils loved being here really surprised us. I am more used to them being very official in the way they report. It is tremendous to hear them talk about the school like that."

The February inspection found the 203-pupil school in Liverpool Road to be strong in its teaching of maths but recommended that more work be done to improve the teaching of writing.

Chair of governors David Johnson said: "I am very pleased with this latest inspection report."
