DAVID May's imminent suspension comes at a crucial time for the Clarets. The defender will sit out the Easter double-header away to Walsall and at home to Watford.

But next season, suspensions are set to be speeded up as part of a new disciplinary code being implemented by the Football Association.

Under the new guidelines, bans following an accumulation of yellow cards (5, 10, 15, etc.) will come into effect seven days after the last card, rather than the present 14 days.

For red cards, the penalty is instant suspension if the incident seen and dealt with by the match referee.

All claims for wrongful dismissal must be lodged the next working day, with claims being heard within four days and further penalties being imposed for frivolous appeals.

Incidents not seen by the referee, including violent conduct, spitting, offensive words and gestures, are to be dealt with in the same manner, with any suspension starting immediately following the hearing.

Under the new guidelines, appeals will only be permitted if the ban exceeds three matches.

FA chief executive, Mark Palios, said: "When I travel around, the one call I get more than any other from everyone within the game is the need to address the speed with which we deal with disciplinary cases and we believe we have now done that.

"This is the most far-reaching review of the disciplinary process in the game since the mid-1990s and we need the clubs and the players to play their part.

"This is what football wanted and what football needs."

Famous faces spin up support

CELEBRITY Clarets fans have thrown their weight behind the proposed launch of a Burnley Football Club Supporters Trust, which is set for a day of reckoning tomorrow.

An open meeting is scheduled for 12.30pm in the James Hargreaves Suite at Turf Moor, where a variety of speakers will lay out the plans for the Trust, which aims to help give fans a better say in the running of their club.

Burnley FC chief executive Dave Edmundson has already put on record his view that a Supporters Trust could be a vitally important step forward.

And several other messages of support have been passed on in the hope that a 'yes' vote can take the venture on to the next step.

Alastair Campbell said: "I know the passion felt by Burnley supporters and the Supporters Trust is a further expression of support from the community.

"I wish it well in its efforts to make a difference for fans and club alike."

Newspaper editor and TV pundit Tony Livesey added: ""Burnley fans standing shoulder to shoulder are a formidable force and the Supporters Trust has my 100% support.

"I am never prouder than when I tell everyone I meet that I am a Claret. As Spartacus taught us, the time has come to stand up and, one by one, pronounce: 'I'm a Burnley fan!'"

Clarets legend Willie Irvine also voiced his support, insisting: "With the setting up of a Supporters Trust, here is the perfect opportunity for fans to help make sure that this famous club will still be there for their grandchildren to support."

The proposed Trust would be run by supporters, for supporters, and in the overall interests of Burnley Football Club.

Therefore, all fans are being urged to make their way to Turf Moor tomorrow to hear at first hand how a Supporters' Trust would be able to make a real difference.

Doors will open at 12 noon, and proceedings are due to get underway at 12:30pm sharp.

The press pack pounced to corner May for interviews ahead of the Turf Moor clash.
