DARWEN Cricket Club is to receive a cash boost as part of a government scheme to fund sport in the North West.

The club has been given £2,809 to renovate its pitch and clubhouse as part of the Community Development Programme.

Ian Cordingley, club committee member, said: "We're trying to put a drain at the top of the square.

"Flooding has been a problem here since 1911 and we're hoping the drain will give us drier matches.

"We've been champions of the Northern League for the last two years and other clubs don't like coming here because of the soft pitch. Hopefully this should make it easier for them."

The drain should be installed by either September 2004 or 2005.

The Community Development Programme is giving 49 sports clubs across the North West a cash injection of more than £4 million.

Culture secretary Tessa Jowell said: "This is an exciting step forward in our plans to invest in community sport across the country.

" It gives governing bodies the chance to play a major role in improving their clubs' facilities."
