TWO newly-created township groups have worked together for the first time to create a landmark gateway between both towns.

Atherton Greener Cleaner Community members, asked Leigh to join them in their vision to improve a reclaimed pit site, the 'green hill', at Atherleigh.

Both contributed six Italian alder trees which were planted, pictured top right, -- and helped to make a former council chairman's faraway vision for the old Victoria pit site come true.

Thirty years ago Atherton UDC under the leadership of Cllr Jack Sumner transformed the slag heaps at the old Victoria pit on the border of Leigh and Atherton planting trees and shrubs.

Now Cllr Sumner's son, Keith, an Atherton Cleaner Greener member, has added to his dream.

He said: "The trees will be quite a landmark for the community. My father was one of the councillors who wanted to reclaim this area of land and it's good to see the Green Hill in the condition it is now. We've come a long way."

The area was planted with daffodils in December.

Pam Stewart, vice chair of Leigh Township Forum, said: "Hopefully these trees will contribute to people's enjoyment of the place they live and work,"

Cllrs Mark Aldred and Susan Loudon, of the Atherton group, said: "It is an excellent green area that gives both Leigh and Atherton a wonderful gateway,

"A big thank you goes to Leigh for agreeing to meet us halfway. This is a good start to a strong partnership."
