RADCLIFFE' S planned state-of-the-art school will be named Radcliffe Riverside School.

The governors made their decision at the end of last week after two students from Coney Green suggested the name.

Year Seven pupils Demi Langton and Sophie Gaffney will share the competition prize, each receiving £50 worth of vouchers. They both chose the name because the school will be close to the River Irwell.

Until the schools are merged in September, the Coney Green site will be known as the East Campus and the Radcliffe High site as the West Campus.

Plans to develop a new high school were given the green light in February by the Department for Education and Skills.

The Government has pledged £5 million toward the costs and Bury Council plans to raise the rest of the money through the sale of the two existing high school sites in Abden Street and Spring Lane, and through other funding sources.

The former East Lancs Paper Mill in Radcliffe has been earmarked as the site for the £15 million project.

Radcliffe High School and Coney Green Technology College formed their own school council at the end of March, and one of the first decisions they undertook was to create a short-list of names for the new school.

The 24 pupil council members from both sites will also play a part in designing a logo and badge for the new school.

Mrs Diana Morton, school executive head, said: "From September 1, the name of the new school will be the Radcliffe Riverside School.

"There were 70 entries in the competition to find a new name and the governors made a final decision from a short-list of the most popular suggestions.

"They also felt it was important that Radcliffe remained as part of the name because the new school will be at the heart of the community and play a central role in the regeneration of the town."
