A WOMAN was taken to hospital with a head injury today after being hit by a double decker bus in Darwen.

The female, whose identity has not been revealed by police, was in collision with the Blackburn Transport Darwen Circus No 1 bus at around 9am.

Police inquiries are continuing into how the accident happened and a section of Darwen Bus Station was cordoned off.

The double-decker had been turning into the bus station from Market Street when it collided with the woman.

She suffered a head injury in the accident and was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary by ambulance but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Passers-by gathered at The Circus after a number of police cars and vans blocked off one lane of the bus station where the woman was lying in the road. She was lifted on to a stretcher and initially treated in the back of the ambulance.

One man, working nearby, who didn't want to be named, said: "I didn't see what happened. I don't think anybody did really. I just looked out and saw the woman in the road in front of the bus.

"She had blood coming from her nose and obviously had a head injury. There seemed to be quite a bit of blood but you can't really tell."

Ward councillor Dave Hollings said: "Any accident is upsetting but I am not aware of that corner being a major problem. A traffic survey was done about six years ago by the council to find out where the hot spots for accidents were and that area was not one of them.

"It seems this might have been a one-off accident."
