A COMMUNITY united in celebration of a Whitefield synagogue's 30th anniversary.

Jewish and non-Jewish guests attended a special service and re-consecration ceremony at Hillock Hebrew Congregation on Sunday (May 9).

More than 150 people attended the event at the synagogue in Beverley Close and enjoyed refreshments afterwards.

Special prayers and speeches were given by distinguished guests, such as Rev Leslie Olsberg, from Heaton Park Synagogue, and Dayan Y.O. Steiner, from Beth Din.

Commemorative plaques for the anniversary and re-consecration were unveiled by Bury South MP Ivan Lewis and David Arnold, the president of the Jewish Representative Council.

The day's events marked a new beginning for the congregation after their place of worship had suffered numerous vandal attacks, including an arson attack last year.

Secretary Richard Walker said: "It was a lovely day. Everybody said it was an emotional and enjoyable service. Now we want to look forward to the future and carry on working for the Jewish community."
