THUGS ripped apart a pet budgie and "cooked" one of its legs during a drink and drug-fuelled party.

The mutilated remains of the nine-year-old bird, called Lucy, were then scattered around the bungalow in Walshaw Road, Bury.

In a catalogue of destruction, the yobs trashed the bungalow by smearing dog excrement on the carpets and furniture, poured food and glue throughout the property and smashed a window and a dining table. Eggs were thrown at the walls and aerosol paints were sprayed on bedding and in several rooms.

The owner of the house, Mrs Lynn Dougherty, and her partner, Trevor, were in Morecambe with their 12-year-old grand-daughter when the party was hosted by her daughter, Faye, last Friday night. Mrs Dougherty's grand-daughter's bedroom was badly damaged and her TV and video were stolen.

Mrs Dougherty said: "When we returned from Morecambe, we walked into a nightmare. The house was a mess and all our bedding and furniture was covered in dog muck although we fear it may human excrement. Food had been poured and thrown around the house, milk had been poured on the videos. The place has been ransacked.

"I am absolutely disgusted by what has happened but the most upsetting thing is that Lucy, my granddaughter's pet budgie, had been literally chopped up. Her remains were scattered throughout the house."

The wrecking spree was discovered by Mrs Dougherty's other daughter, Zoe. Messages have since been left on the family's telephone answering machine by youths bragging about the death of the bird and the vandalism.

Mrs Dougherty said her daughter Faye (28) had only moved in with her four weeks ago after living in Ainsworth, and said she had a history of alcohol abuse.

Her daughter disappeared for several days after the party but was arrested on Tuesday morning when she returned to the house and was questioned by police.

She has since been bailed pending further inquiries.

PC Mo Duffield, who is leading the investigation into the incident, urged members of the public to help identify those who attended the party.

He said: "What happened at this house can only be described as a pure act of evil by a number of people with no respect for other people's property or animals.

"Personally, I am shocked by the savagery of those who attended this party. This is one of the worst incidents I have ever had to deal with."
