CONSTRUCTION sites across the region are facing a health and safety blitz in a bid to reduce the number of serious accidents.

The inspections, part of the Health and Safety Executive's FaTaL Risks Campaign 2004, will concentrate on the three main causes of accidents -- Falls, Transport and Lifting.

Last year, 13 fatal accidents and around 500 serious injuries occurred in the north west, with five people killed in the Greater Manchester area.

It is likely that enforcement action, including prohibiting work, will be taken during the blitz if effective precautions are not in place.

The site visits will take place up until June 25.
