PROJECTS set up to get elderly folk skiing and dancing their way into action have won a regional award.

Staff from Blackburn with Darwen's Primary Care Trust along with the council and volunteers were celebrating after scooping a £1,000 prize last night.

Two initiatives -- Sloppy Slipper Exchange and Up for Owt -- aimed at keeping older people active and safe, won a 2004 Health and Social Care Northern Regional Queen Mother's Care of Older People Award.

The lifestyles projects, aimed at the over 50s, were the only winners from Lancashire.

Janet Ledward, strategic manager for the PCT, said: "We are very pleased the schemes are making a real difference to peoples' lives.

"They help improve the quality of life of older people by preventing or delaying frailty and disability. Safer slippers help prevent falls and the Up for Owt project encourages better health through physical activity and sporting opportunities for older people."

The Up for Owt project has given over 50s a chance to take part in a range of activities included cycling, horse riding and walking as well as more energetic activities like skiing, activity holidays and salsa dancing.
